Manuscripts-Manuscripts in History
This
event celebrates the 200th anniversary (11 March) of the Manuscripts
department of the National Library of Russia. Plenary meeting will
discuss aspects of preservation, description, research and
publication of handwritten documents. Topics for panel meetings will
include (1) national cultural manuscripts, 1700 to the present:
preservation, description and use; (2) Old Russian manuscripts in
the collections of the National Library of Russia; (3) western
European manuscripts in the P. P. Dubrovsky Collection and their
significance in world scholarship; (4) the development and scholarly
importance of Oriental manuscript collections in the National
Library of Russia; and (5) expertise in dealing with historical
documents: state of the art and future prospects. Especially welcome
are historians, philologists, philosophers, art scholars and all
other researchers using the manuscript collections of the National
Library of Russia in their studies.
Call for papers: submit abstracts and contact details by 31 March
2005. Submissions of proposals should contain: the subject of the
paper or report; author's full name, degree and title (if any);
affiliation (place of work or study) and position, address for
communications, phone, e-mail address, and desired hotel reservation
(if any). (NB: the organizing committee is unable to cover
transportation and accommodation costs for the contributors.)
Conference proceedings will be published. Papers and reports should
not exceed 20,000 symbols (footnotes incl.). International
contributors requiring a Russian visa should also provide relevant
information for an official invitation: foreign passport serial and
index number, date and place of birth, fax number, communication
language (Russian, German, English, French). International
contributors should also enclose a high-quality photocopy of the
passport.

émotions au Moyen Âge et aujourd'hui : questions de sources et de
méthodes »
Une histoire des émotions
médiévales est-elle possible ?
Telle est bien la question que nous nous posons, en organisant cette
première journée d'études. Avant même d'envisager la multiplicité
des sources, une double difficulté préalable se dresse : le mot et
la notion. Le mot "émotion" apparaît tardivement dans les langues
vernaculaires, après le Moyen Âge pour le français "esmotion"
(1534). Le médiéviste doit donc d'emblée renoncer au confort d'un
mot qui serait un parfait reflet de son objet d'analyse. De cette
absence naît l'abondance, car les langues médiévales ont par
ailleurs une profusion de termes se rapportant à l'émotion (pour le
seul latin : passio ; affectus ; perturbatio ; inclinatio ; primus
motus, etc.)
Pour tracer un chemin dans cette forêt de mots, il devient
indispensable de se munir d'une boussole sémantique : le concept
même d'émotion qu'il conviendra de définir. Mais aussitôt l'aiguille
de la boussole s'affole, tendue tour à tour vers la diversité des
discours et des catégories des sciences humaines contemporaines.
L'émotion est-elle une pure réaction physiologique ou au contraire
un produit de l'esprit ? un choc psychique abrupt et éphémère ou
bien un état affectif complexe, qui s'inscrit dans la durée ?
crée-t-elle une perturbation de la conscience ou en est-elle
l'expression la plus aiguë ?
Loin de toute illusion taxinomique, une enquête sur les émotions
médiévales ne peut ainsi se construire qu'à travers un dialogue
entre les catégories des discours médiévaux, eux-mêmes multiples, et
celles des sciences humaines et sociales actuelles. Le projet EMMA
fait le pari de ce dialogue et de la possibilité d'une anthropologie
historique des émotions au Moyen Âge.
