This workshop provides the forum for researchers and practitioners from industries, academia, and government agencies to discuss several critical issues in conceptual modeling. In the workshop this year, there are four panel discussion sessions focusing on the following topics: (1) SOA, C4ISR, Software Architecture, (2) Incorporating Security in Conceptual Modeling, (3) Web Service Design and Conceptual Modeling, (4) Simulation and Conceptual Modeling.

Traditionally, the database research community has focused on methodologies, techniques, and technologies for data management to support and enable business activities. Yet, in the last couple of decades this equilibrium has been completely overturned, as data-management research and development problems became part of every individual and collective activity in our society. New ways of representing information require equally new approaches and technologies for its storage and processing: examples of these range from multimedia data streams and storage systems to semantic-web knowledge linked all over the Web, and from scientific time series to natural language information that has to be understood by software programs. Therefore, a data-centric vision of the world is actually key for advancing in such a demanding scenario, where two orthogonal phenomena take place: on the one hand, rather than storing, managing and analyzing only the current state of the information we are forced to deal with the management of information change; on the other hand, the new ways to access data must take into consideration the kind of data available today and a new population of prospective users.

Due to the enormous amount of data present and growing in the Web, there has been an increasing interest in incorporating this huge enormous of external and unstructured data, normally referred as "Big Data", into traditional applications. As a result, this new conception of cloud applications incorporating both internal and external Big data requires new models and methods to accomplish their conceptual modelling phase. Thus, the objective of MoDIC'12 is to be an international forum for exchanging ideas on the latest and best proposals for the conceptual modeling surrounding this new data-drive paradigm with Big Data. Papers focusing on the application and the use of conceptual modeling approaches (e.g. based on EER, UML and so on) for Big Data, MapReduce, Hadoop and Hive, Big Data Analytics, social networking, Security and privacy data science, etc. will be highly encouraged.

MORE-BI will bring together researchers in conceptual modeling, ontology engineering, knowledge representation, and reasoning with business analysts, developers, managers, and consultants involved in the definition of requirements for, development, use, and evolution of Business Intelligence (BI) systems. The aim is to initiate discussions and studies in ontologies, modeling languages, and reasoning methods relevant for the engineering of requirements for, and the engineering and specification of BI systems. These modeling and reasoning techniques should provide more precise and rich information for the end-user, bridging the gap between technical and user-centric tools for Business Intelligence. The workshop is the first of its kind to provide a forum for both research and practice in the conceptual modeling and reasoning needed for the engineering of BI systems, and encourages interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of this field.

Recent advances in information technologies have increased the production, collection, and diffusion of geographical data, thus favoring the design and development of geographic information systems (GIS). Nowadays GISs are emerging as a common information infrastructure, which penetrate into more and more aspects of our society. This has given rise to new methodological and data engineering challenges in order to accommodate new users' requirements for new applications. Conceptual and semantic modeling are ideal candidates to contribute to the development of the next generation of GIS solutions. They allow to elicitate and capture user requirements as well as the semantics of a wide domain of applications.
SeCoGIS is intended to bring together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners carrying out research and development in geographic information systems. The aim is to stimulate discussions on the integration of conceptual modeling and semantics into current geographic information systems, and how this will benefit the end users. The workshop will provide a forum for original research contributions and practical experiences of conceptual modeling and semantic web technologies for GIS, fostering interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of these two fields, and will highlight future trends in this area. The workshop will be organized in a way to highly stimulate interaction amongst the participants.

The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for bringing together researchers, practitioners, designers, and users of Web Information Systems (WIS) and discuss how specific issues of WIS design can be addressed by means of modeling. Specifically, we will discuss how the influence of Semantic Web technology can help in a model-driven WIS development. Thus, the workshop should enable a fruitful exchange of ideas in the state-of-the-art of WIS modeling.
